My name is Nataliia, and I am an illustrator, graphic designer, and emerging stained glass artist. Originally from Ukraine, I have been living in Reykjavik, Iceland, since 2015. My journey in the arts began with studying fine art in 1996, followed by a BA in Graphic Design in 2004. Since then, I have worked in the field for various companies, as well as an independent artist.
In 2023, I discovered my passion for stained glass after visiting a medieval stained glass exhibition at the Burrell Collection in Glasgow. Inspired by its beauty and craftsmanship, I began learning about stained glass by attending masterclasses led by experts and reading books recommended to me, including works by Patrick Reyntiens, Albinas Elskus, Anita and Seymour Isenberg, and Jonathan Cooke. My studies have taken me to museums, specialist workshops, and masterclasses with renowned experts, including Jonathan Cooke at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Flora Jamieson at her studio in Dorset, and Ellen van Dijk at Glasatelier Ellen. Most recently, I attended a two-day glass painting workshop at the Stained Glass Museum in Ely Cathedral, taught by Derek Hunt.
My ambition is to develop my own style in stained glass while mastering traditional techniques. Ultimately, I aspire to become a conservator, contributing to the preservation of this beautiful heritage. I believe that by gathering and sharing knowledge, we can ensure that the art of stained glass continues to thrive for future generations.
An interesting detail about me is that I have Coloured grapheme synaesthesia, meaning I naturally perceive letters, words, and numbers in different colours. For instance, when I read the words Stained Glass in a book, although they are printed normally, I perceive them like this: Stained Glass
